embarassed to go to doctor
I would be interested in hearing from others who are virgins and have visited the gynecologist, especially if they had pap smears done.
I'm embarassed because I'm an older virgin and I'm a little concerned about any pain that might be involved in the exam. I read and was glad to know that gynecologists can use a more slender speculum to examine virgins and one finger instead of two (I will definitely ask my doctor about these things, even though the second would be embarassing to me.)
I am though a little confused about whether a pap smear is necessary for virgins. Also, I posted this under hymens because that's a concern & embarassment for me too - the fact that I still have one not yet broken by intercourse and that the doctor may have to break it for the pap smear test or other parts of the exam.
I'm way too embarassed to ask a doctor all these things. I know I should. But if you know anything relevant it would be a start for me. Thank you.

Well I'm sure that you know that a Pap detects Stds and cervical cancer (which is the end result from Sexually transmitted HPV strains) So do you need one?...well have you ever had any genital contact with anyone? All it takes to get Hpv is skin contact with the genitals! This includes, mouth, butt, or hand. So if you are a real virgin and you don't go around giving oral and anal sex all over the place (because you think that doesn't count)then you are probably ok. However the Gynecologist would probably recommend you come in anyway.....It's up to you, but if I was a REAL virgin woman and I didn't have any problems I wouldn't bother going in. But it's really up to you.

Thanks for a response. I think you bring up good points. About cervical cancer - while searching on the internet for info, I read that it is possible for virgins to get it. I also read that a couple years ago some group (maybe it was a cancer group or a doctor's group) stated that virgins don't need pap smears. So I was curious to know what any virgins who've been to a gyno recently (there are reasons other than pap smears to go, I think, like breast/general exam) got done and whether it was an embarassing visit for them or, if they're older like me (late 20s) how their doctors reacted to them being virgins.
I tend to think like you, there's no reason for me to go because I've had no genital contact and nothing strange going on down there right now (though, like many women, I have had irregular periods in the past.) I guess my doubts are not really killing me though, or I would've scheduled an appointment years ago to put my mind at rest.

Dont worry
if you ask your doctor they should tell you that you are supposed to get a pap smear two years before you become sexually acitve.
